Applying for international protection means asking Ireland to protect you if you cannot return safely to your country of origin.

Overview

Applying for International Protection in Ireland

You may need international protection if you cannot return to your country of origin because you fear persecution or face a real risk of serious harm.
 International protection is also called asylum.

It is your right to apply for international protection in Ireland.

In Europe, international protection can take different forms, including:

  • Refugee status
  • Subsidiary protection

Where to apply

You can register your IP application by visiting the Citywest Reception Centre in Saggart.

Once you have registered your IP application, you can manage your application via the Online Portal. Click here for directions to the Citywest Reception Centre.

Who is it for

International protection is for people who cannot be protected by their country of origin.

You may need international protection if:

  • Your life or freedom would be in danger if you returned to your country, and
  • The authorities in your country cannot or will not protect you

International protection exists to protect people in these situations.

The process

When you apply, the authorities will assess whether you need international protection.

During the international protection procedure, the authorities will assess:

  • Whether you need international protection, and
  • Which type of protection may apply to your situation
  • Whether you are complying with any conditions during the application process

You will have the opportunity to explain:

  • Why you left your country
  • Why you are afraid to return

Once you apply, you are considered an applicant for international protection.

Getting ready

Before you apply, it is important to understand what will be expected of you.

As an applicant for international protection, you are expected to:

  • Cooperate with the authorities
  • Provide information as soon as you can
  • Attend interviews and appointments
  • Tell the truth and provide accurate information
  • Inform the authorities if your contact details change
  • Seek legal advice or counselling if you need support understanding the process

During the international protection process, support may be available to help you understand and participate in the process.

  • You may receive information about your rights and obligations
  • Interpretation may be provided if you do not speak English
  • You may seek legal advice or legal assistance
  • You may receive information about available support services

You will be informed about available supports at appropriate stages of your application.

Directions from Dublin City Centre to Citywest Reception Centre
Applications and Interviews

By car

From Dublin City Centre, take the route west out of the city towards the N7/Naas Road, following signs for Limerick / Cork / Citywest. Continue along the N7 and take the exit for Citywest / Saggart, then follow signs for Citywest Hotel through the Citywest business campus area. The journey is approximately 15–16 km and typically takes around 17 minutes by car, depending on traffic. Get directions to drive to the IPO Office on Google Maps.

By bus

Citywest Reception Centre is serviced by the following Dublin Bus routes: 77A; W62
