About Us

The International Protection Office is responsible for processing international protection applications for asylum in Ireland

We assess whether applicants qualify for refugee status or subsidiary protection under Irish and EU law. Our Responsibilities Include:

  • Processing applications for international protection fairly and efficiently

  • Conducting substantive interviews with applicants

  • Assessing credibility and eligibility for protection

  • Making first-instance decisions on protection claims

  • Providing information and guidance to applicants

  • Implementing EU asylum regulations and directives

How we make decisions on applications

Every application is assessed individually based on the specific circumstances and evidence provided. Our decision-makers are trained professionals who:

  • Consider all relevant evidence and information

  • Apply Irish and EU law consistently and fairly

  • Assess credibility using objective criteria

  • Take into account country of origin information

  • Implementing EU asylum regulations and directives

  • Provide written reasons for all decisions

Independence: IPO case workers make decisions independently, free from political interference or external pressure.

In the IPO we protect your personal information
